Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer

    Product Details

    Product Description

The Clifton Chronicles is Jeffrey Archer’s most ambitious work in four decades as an international bestselling author.

The epic tale of Harry Clifton’s life begins in 1920, with the chilling words, ‘I was told that my father was killed in the war’. But it will be another twenty years before Harry discovers how his father really died, which will only lead him to question: who was his father?

Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who worked in Bristol docks, or the first born son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line?

Only Time will Tell covers the years from 1920 to 1940, and includes a cast of memorable characters that The Times has compared to The Forsyte Saga. Volume one takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford, or join the navy and go to war with Hitler’s Germany.

In Jeffrey Archer’s masterful hands, the reader is taken on a journey that they won’t want to end, and when you turn the last page of this unforgettable yarn, you will be faced with a dilemma that neither you, nor Harry Clifton could have anticipated.

I have always enjoyed Jeffrey Archer's story telling. He is a master at writing an epic, dynastic tale and here is the first of three books that will make up the Clifton Chronicles. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and set off on a real family saga. The opening sentence set the scene and I knew there would be twists and turns to digest. The characters are nicely drawn and the book is divided into sections attributed to how each character views an event and then followed with a further strand to the tale. It makes pleasurable reading but it hasn't blown me away with enthusiasm like previous Archer works have done. The pages turned easily enough but there was no compelling itch to get through them at pace. I think this may be because so many of the events became predictable as the book progressed. The book ends on a cliffhanger and whilst I will carry on reading about the Barringtons and Cliftons, I wont be the first person to rush out and part with my money for the hardback.

Thanks for the review Alison, I don't like the man very much but I've always enjoyed his writing, especially the early books.

Haven't read one of his in years, but loved the Kane and Abel series and, although I'm not a short story reader at all, his are excellent.  For catlovers, I'd highly recommend one called Just Good Friends...

I've been looking forward to this coming out - whatever else you say about Archer and his writing talent (or lack of it - I do always find his characters a bit thin), he certainly can tell a good yarn.

There's an interesting, and very positive, review of this book on The Spectator's website:

I'm usually very good at separating the person from the author, artist, actor etc but can't with Jeffrey Archer, can't abide the man soapart from A Quiver Full Of Arrows haven't read any of his books. Judging from the one I have I'm not missing much IMHO. Maryxx

Every time I have been shopping at Tesco I have been tempted by this but stopped myself. However I was lucky to get a swap for it yesterday so am delighted. Now I have to resist the Kindles they are selling at Tesco til Christmas. You know half the time I come home with no food lol.

I picked this up for kindle for 20p.  Have not read any of his books before as I am not a fan of the man.  However I was surprised to be hooked from page 1 and am now on the second book.  It says here that this is part of a trilogy but I read online that he plans 5 books in total bringing the story up to 2020. can't wait for the third one, due out inMarch. In the meantime, I can catch up with his other books if, plenty of them in the local library to keep me going.

Re: Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer

I took this one on holiday and read it within a day.  Archer has not lost his talent for spinning a good yarn and I found this to be the perfect holiday read.   It felt like something that Barbara Taylor-Bradford or Penny Vincenzi would write, and although some of the characters were a little stereotypical and predictable, it really hit the spot with me.

Looking forward to reading the next edition in the Chronicles.
