Books you have read and not liked....and why?

The only book i have read and not liked so far......

A Clockwork Orange: Liked the film but the book didn't make much sense to me, i found it quite difficult to follow.

Lady Chattersley's Lover: I'm not entirely sure why but it didn't match the expectations that i had of it.

I have comrades in Heaven and allies in Hell

Currently reading - Elizabeth by David Starkey

I've never been able to get beyond the first few chapters of The Time Travellers Wife, but since it came in at number two on Waterstones top 25 reads , maybe I should revisit it one day. It's still sitting on my book's shelf.........

Of all the books I've read (nearly 400) in the past few years there are only 2 I remember positively hating: American Pastoral by Philip Roth and Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.  (Both were chosen by our reading group, otherwise I don't think I'd ever have picked either of them up, never mind read them!)

Re: Books you have read and not liked....and why?

There are many books I've started and hated, not many that I've read completely and not like though.  I dont tend to keep going if I am not enjoying a book, life's too short and too many others to choose.

So the ones that I have tried and hated include:

    Time Travelers Wife
We Need to Talk About Kevin

They are the two that most stick in my memory, probably because there is such a divide in opinions on both of them

Anne - TTW and Kevin are on my all-time top 10 list!

    Books I've hated recently include:

The Human Stain - Philip Roth (again)

Vernon God Little - D Pierre (or something)

The Other Side of You - Salley Vickers

The reason I didn't like The Human Stain or the Other Side was they were very wordy - I found myself having to read paragraphs three times and even then not knowing (or caring) what happened.   Vernon God Little just irritated me because I hate smart-a*se teens!

The 3 that spring most recently to mind are:

The Night Watch by Sarah Waters - just didn't like the writing style or really make a connection with the characters

Notes on a Scandal - Zoe Heller (ditto!)

Brick Lane - Monica Ali - didn't think it was that original or good!

I don't always need to 'engage' with book characters but these books seemed to need you to - to make the read enjoyable

Haven't really analysed why but didn't enjoy -

PS I love you - Cecilia Ahern

The Five People you Meet in Heaven - just couldn't get into this despite several attempts.

White Teeth - Zadie Smith (persevered but didn't really rate)

The Accidental - Ali Smith (didn't persevere)

     think I'd better stop now.....

I find I can't read any Zadie Smith, have attempted several of her books and just don't enjoy them.

OMG me too, my friend ranted about how brilliant it was and I just wasn't overly impressed - Clockwork orange I didn't like the film that much either but again it was over rated

I agree with you there Anne, I couldn't get into those two either.  Also agree with Brick Lane and Vernon God Little.

Re: Books you have read and not liked....and why?

I always make a point of finishing anything I've started, but I really struggled with Geraldine Brooks' March.  Another one that wasn't easy was Nicole Krauss'The History of Love - but when I got to the end I almost wanted to read it again so I understood it better (but resisted the temptation...!).
