New Classics - choose just one!

Anything on your "all time favourite reads" that you think will be a 'classic'? i.e. a book that goes on and on and is still being read and enjoyed in 100 years time?  Or something not on your favourites list that you think will stick around?

Just one title?  Well add more if you must, but this is just an exercise to make you think a bit.

Not sure whether to go for Private Peaceful, Michael Morpurgo yet... will have a think about this one!

So far, then we have the following:

The House of Leaves  by Mark K Danielewski

Remains Of The Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

In The Place of Fallen Leaves by Tim Pears

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

    The Road by Cormac McCarthy

    Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo

The Bone People by Keri Hulme

Lord of the Rings by J R Tolkein (trilogy)

His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman (trilogy)

The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood

    Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue

The last Samuri - Helen de Witt

    Middlesex - Jeffrey Eugenides

One of my All Time Favourite Reads - 'The House of Leaves' by Mark K Danielewski was niminated one of the best works of new literature of the past decade.  Not too shabby!

Of the ones on my ATFR list on here, about a third already are classics, which is an eye opener cos I always think I don't read enough classics, so I must read more than I thought which is nice!

Of the ones that aren't I would say the one I would most like to still be around would be The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, I just think it's a great way of educating our youth that not everyone in Germany during the war was a Nazi, and they suffered just as much as we did in bombings etc,

I'd also like to think that more generations of children would be getting immersed in the world of Harry Potter!

I loved The Woman in Black by Susan Hill and think this could well become a classic, if it isn't already.

Im with you here Nat. I loved the bookthief and I think it's so important to recognise that people in Germany suffered too + its told in such a unique style which makes it memorable.

I also dread to think that children now or in a few years wont read Harry Potter like I did when I was their age. If I have kids Im definitely going to read all of the books to them from a ridiculous young age. I hope they become classics and I also hope that His Dark Materials becomes a trilogy as celebrated as Lord of the Rings someday.

Me too - Philip Pullman's masterful trio.  I am still toying with several, but at the moment I think I will have to put forward Private Peaceful - Michael Morpurgo.

Agree with you there too!  I read the first three HP books to my son before he even turned 1!!  We haven't gotten further yet as he was getting more aware and getting scared and also 4 and 5 are just enormous!!  I do hope we get to them again soon though!  We've almost finished Roald Dahl, and will be moving on to D.Ick King Smith soon, then hopefully we shall start HP again from the start!

Also agree about His Dark Materials, genius stuff!!

I love all of these books and authors!  I even have Harry Potter on my ipod for when I can't sleep.

I really like Dear Olly by Michael Morpurgo and it's one of my niece's favourites too.
