    Mudbound - Hillary Jordan

"When Henry McAllan moves his city-bred wife, Laura, to a cotton farm in the Mississippi Delta in 1946, she finds herself in a place both foreign and frightening. Henry's love of rural life is not shared by Laura, who struggles to raise their two young children in an isolated shotgun shack under the eye of her hateful, racist father-in-law. When it rains, the waters rise up and swallow the bridge to town, stranding the family in a sea of mud. As the Second World War shudders to an end, two young men return from Europe to help work the farm. Jamie McAllan is everything his older brother Henry is not and is sensitive to Laura's plight, but also haunted by his memories of combat. Ronsel Jackson, eldest son of the black sharecroppers who live on the farm, comes home from war with the shine of a hero, only to face far more dangerous battles against the ingrained bigotry of his own countrymen. These two unlikely friends become players in a tragedy on the grandest scale".

Mudbound is a book that is backwards, by that I mean it begins with the ending and then jumps back to the beginning and the story is then told / narrated a chapter at a time by all the different characters, most of whom are likeable in their own way.

Set in the deep south of America just after the 2nd world war and tells of the struggles and prejudices of a farming community and the effects the war has had on two very different returning war heroes.

It's unputdownable, riveting from the first chapter, one of those books that stick in your mind even when you're not reading it. Wonderful stuff, I can't recommend it highly enough. It will without doubt score a 10/10 from me and be joining The Book Thief, Ghostheart in my top books of the year so far. Read it !

Have finshed this now -absolutely brilliant. The outcome will have your heart in your throat. Amazing! Just read it! Even if the style seems a little strange in the beginning, just persevere.

Just finished this one and absolutely loved it - as I usually do books that Maureen recommends! One of those books that you don't want to put down and, when you do, you're thinking about it all the time.  And that explosive ending will stay with me a long time...

Fantastic book, I can only echo the praise already heaped on it.  I found it very moving but I was just about holding it together until Ronsel's chapter at the end, when couldn't hold back the tears any longer.

I can only repeat what has already gone before - a brilliant book. It had me bound up with all the characters and I enjoyed the way each one presented their own story. The ending shocked me and left me thinking 'How could they ?' Definitely full marks for this one. Dog

I've just started this today and am well and truly hooked - sounds like I might need to stock up on some more Kleenex for the ending as I am a big softie...:q28:
