Have just finished this and am desperate to discuss it with someone but I don't know anyone who has read it! Basically I wanted to know whether anyone else was disappointed with the 'twist' at the end. I guessed this was going to happen well before the end.
Spoiler Alert (sorry couldn't find how to make the font colour white to hide it): When Karen is 'raped' for the second time I felt the author had got herself into a no-win situation - either it's unbelievable or there's a twist. As soon as Karen is found in such similar circumstances as the first time, my "unbelievable" antenna startied twitching! The chances that both Karen would have let herself get into that situation and that Robert would have behaved in such a similar manner to their previous encounter was unbelievable. So the only other option was that there was more to it than appeared. I would have felt profoundly dissatisfied if I had been asked to believe that Karen got herself into this situation with someone whom had profoundly affected her whole adult life and if this had have been the case, I would have thrown the book across the room! Therefore the only other scenario available is that Karen had set the whole thing up. As soon as Robert gave his side of the story it seemed immediately apparent to me that he was telling the truth on this occasion but Karen had cleverly set him up. That said, I did think she did it particularly well and thought it was ironic that the one time he was telling the truth was the one time he was punished! Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been written as though it was a real twist.
I did enjoy this book to a certain extent but was disappointed that the twist was so obvious - I don't usually spot them so easily.
I also find as I read more American thrillers that I find myself thinking "thank God for British justice". It may not be perfect but it knocks the spots off the American version. I get especially incensed by the way the media are portrayed as covering cases yet to come to court - again "thank God for the sub judice law"! - how any high profile case is dealt with fairly is difficult to comprehend!
