I would like to nominate "The Northern Clemency" by Philip Hensher which may turn out to be my book of the year.
It is a family saga set in Sheffield set between 1973 and the mid nineties. As I grew up in Sheffield I could recognise all the places but the story itself was also riveting.
Brilliant

As penny has already nominated Flowers for Algernon, I'll go for Boris Akunin's The Death of Achilles this month - a fabulous detective/spy story with all sorts of twists and turns and double-crossing.
