    RiSi Vocabulary

Creative lot that we are, we seem to be coming up with words and terms of phrase for various items that affect reading, swapping and buying books.  Here's a few I can think of - please feel free to post with any I have missed.

Swaplifting - not fulfilling a commitment to swap and therefore stealing a book from another member

D1ck Lit - easy read macho books (Chris Ryan, Andy McNab etc - as opposed to Chick Lit)

Private D1ck Lit - private detective stories, usually easy reading

Thick Book Tax (TBT) - Royal Mail's Packet Rate

Double Parking - when you have so many books on your shelves they are now stored in two rows on one shelf

Double Booking - when you manage somehow to acquire two copies of the same book

How about 'block booking' having piles of books all around the house - and those of us who have them, must be 'page slaves'!

A variation on 'block booking' could be 'swap stack', meaning both books waiting to go out and those that have come in and not yet found a place to lay their spines. Then there is 'multi story (sic) parking' where books are not only double parked but have books stacked on top of them.

Oh - I like 'swap stack'

I often get a "paper jam" too.  This is where a book dropped through the letterbox gets jammed under the front door when I try to open it.  I have to ease my hand in and jiggle the doormat out of the way so I can get in!

What about books being 'held to ransom' when the sender has not paid enough postage, or you can't get to the collections office until the weekend as they are only open during the mornings!

Also someone mentioned an alternative term for chick lit that I thought was really funny, but I can't remember it now...

... or from trying to carry way too many books back from the charity shop because they were cheap, and you knew some people had some of them on their wishlists, and you needed to round out your swaplist with different genres... and just because they were there!
