    Re: Tolly's updated TBR mountain

Hi Wendy, thanks for the comments!

ALBION, ALBION I came across by accident, didn't realise it was Reginald Hill till I got it and was delighted. It's about football gone mad, eventually Parliament is dissolved and the police go on strike. The blurb says 'Makes "Clockwork Orange" seem a gentle fantasy.' A curiosity, but I'd grab anything he wrote.

I do love Rex Stout, and I've been very lucky lately with one swapper.

I've got all the Stephen Booth's, but haven't started reading them yet.

The cat detective books I intend to list in the Book List category, sometime. I love all these series.

I've read some of the Skinner, and the Oz Blackstone series, still a lot to go but they're excellent.

I've picked up The Sixth Lamentation several times, and then picked up something else. I will read it, and the sequel.

The Patrick Suskind is also a bit of a curiosity. It's about the (rather sad) life of a double-bass player. The blurb says 'Trapped and lonely, the bassist offers a classic vision of alienation, much in the manner of Kafka or Beckett)!  From the bits I've dipped into, it is also very funny.

Andrew Greeley writes several series, mainly Irish or American Irish. He's a priest, I believe, and the books reflect that, but as a non-religious person, I do love them.

INCOMPETENCE isn't a Red Dwarf book. It's about a future world which has become so politically correct that  it's a positive virtue to be useless! Will be reading this one soon.

There's also the Father Dowling series, by Ralph McInerny. The was a TV series but the books are better, as usual.

Glad to hear you've listed the Cat Who books. There are quite a lot of Joe Grey and Midnight Louie, not to mention the Marion Babson ones.

My! That really is some list!! Thanks very much for posting it in its glorious entirety, Penny (and I'm glad you got it to work finally).

My comments, for what they're worth, on those I didn't comment on yesterday:

Albion, Albion   by *** Morland (Reginald Hill)   Ooh, another for the wishlist, I fear!
American Gods  by Neil Gaiman  On my TBR but love the Gaiman I have read
Giotto's Hand by Iain Pears   On my TBR
Headlong  by Michael Frayn  Enjoyable at the time though not terribly memorable!
Messenger of Truth (Maisie Dobbs)  by Jacqueline Winspear  I’ve enjoyed all this series so far
On the Edge  by Peter Lovesey  A good thriller with a twist – Peter Lovesey is definitely one of my favourite authors, especially love the Diamond books
Oracle Night  by Paul Auster On my TBR
Ratking  by Michael Dibdin  I think Aurelio Zen might be something of an acquired taste – I quite like him (though this first one isn’t the best)
Smoke and Mirrors  by Neil Gaiman  Wonderful short stories – some real gems in this collection
Suite Francais  by Irene Nemirovsky  One of our recent reading group choices, otherwise I wouldn’t have read it; not as good as I’d been led to expect
The Circle  by Peter Lovesey  Really enjoyed this one
The Dumas Club  by Arturo Perez-Reverte  On my TBR
The First Casualty  by Ben Elton  Rather different from Elton’s others and a good read – sort of blend between Birdsong and the final series of Blackadder!!
The Gardens of the Dead  by William Brodrick  On my TBR
The Historian  by Elizabeth Kostova  I really enjoyed this (though it does sag a little in the middle)
The Hours  by Michael Cunningham  On my TBR
The Name of the Rose  by Umberto Eco  Read this some years ago and can’t really remember an awful lot about it!
The Pale Blue Eye  by Louis Bayard  On my TBR
The Purity of Blood  by Arturo Perez Reverte  On my TBR
The Raphael Affair  by Iain M Pears  On my TBR
The Savage Garden  by Mark Mills  On my TBR
The Secret Hangman  by Peter Lovesey   Again – love it!
The Sixth Lamentation  by William Brodrick  On my TBR
The Sunday Philosophy Club  by A McCall Smith  To my mind not as good as the Ladies Detective series but still a nice read!
Upon A Dark Night  by Peter Lovesey  And again!!

A lot there I haven't heard of, what 'genre' are they mainly from.

They're mainly rather obscure detective stories which I love and have started to collect, British and American. Nosing them out is great fun and they don't write 'em like that any more!

I'm looking forward to The Jester, sounds different. The Dean James are wonderful, there are four of them, I think, at the moment, but Faked is the first one.

I'm glad you liked the Historian, I've been putting it off a bit as it's so big, but may try it next.

    Re: Tolly's updated TBR mountain

    Thanks, Penny -

Peter Lovesey has become one of my favourite authors, they really are good reading, the Peter Diamond and the others.

I never liked the Ladies Detective series of McCall Smith, I'm not sure why. I thought I'd give the Sunday Philosphy Club a go.

Arturo Perez Reverte is a great find. I read a modern setting one first, about chess (can't remember the name) and in spite of so-so reviews on Amazon I was hooked.

I've never actually read any of the Zen books, though I've swapped some on. I'm keeping the Ratking to see how it all started.

Re: Tolly's updated TBR mountain - Updated 20/10/07

Bliss  by Katherine Mansfield I like Katherine Mansfield's style of writing, although I think it's become archaic... I do like her short stories, though: I remember one that starts describing the sky and thena the sea and then the rocks and then a seaside town and then a person and so on, like a camera zooming in on a community - very clever technique that I've seen repeated (by Ali Smith, so it must be good)

Kafka on the Shore  by Haruki Murakami
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles  by Haruki Murakami SOO jealous that you've got hold of these!!! Have been trying to get a Murakami since I started up here, I think he was my first wish. Despite requesting his entire book list from different people, I haven't managed to swap for a single one! I take it as a sign that he's so good he's worth holding onto, though... Maybe Santa will bring me some...

The Chatham School Affair by Thomas H Cook I went to school in Chatham... I'll have to look this up...

All Quiet on the Orient Express  by Magnus Mills I saved this one til last on purpose. I don't want to build up an expectation that's too high so you are disappointed, but this book is one of the greatest books e
