so I'm going to read number 6 - Goodbye, Janette by Harold Robbins.  I love the description: Two randy sisters at large in the Parisian world of haute couture. :q27:

I'm sure you'll enjoy it Josette, Harold Robbins was of an era and certain genre of writing.  I've read an odd one or two of his over the years.

I've never heard of him, Bernie, but from that description, he sounds like the male equivalent of Jilly Cooper!

At the time they were considered a little risque.  I've found this on wikipedia about his book The Carpetbaggers.

The Carpetbaggers was published at the onset of the sexual revolution. Only two years earlier, the U.S. Postmaster General had banned D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover from the mails as obscene. In 1960, publisher Grove Press won the Supreme Court case contesting the ban, but even in 1961 booksellers all over the country were sued for selling Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer. Parker quotes a professor of English as saying "The Carpetbaggers could have sent any retailer handling it to prison before 1960."

Mr Grey I don't mind at all if Henry Cavill plays you.

Mine was a Harold Robbins too Josette, 79 Park Avenue - I have read him before and he's more Jackie Collins than 50 Shades. We'll have to compare notes later...

Annie's right he's more of a bonkbuster writer like Jackie Collins than an outright book in the 50 Shades style.

Deal!  I've managed to track down a copy of Goodbye, Janette from Abe Books for the princely sum of £2.04 - including postage!  Thanks for the info, ladies. Smile

There wasn't one for the month I was born in in 1948 but either side were The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer and Shannon's Way by AJ Cronin.  I don't think I fancy either one!

I only liked the sound of one book on my list which is The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough.

Will try to get hold of a copy.

I've already read and loved the No. 1 book for my birth week:  VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, by Jacqueline Susann. I'll check out the others, see if there is anything I fancy

Snap, I'm going for this one. Although it's a bit of a cheat as I did read it in the 80's but fancy looking at it again and the others were uninspiring.

Fab book Sam.  I've got a keeper copy of it somewhere I think, if you're struggling finding a copy and if I can find it you're very welcome to borrow it.

There are some quite famous books on my week like Slaughterhouse 5 and The Godfather.  I'll do a bit of research on the others and make a choice.

I've finally gone for The Goodbye Look by Ross Macdonald - a crime writer I've never heard of:

I like Ross Macdonald - not particularly demanding but good stories.

Not sure I fancy any of mine ... Kiss Kiss by Roald Dahl or Thrush Green by Miss Read are the only ones that sound even possible. I read Miss Read's series as a teenager and it might be interesting to see how they have aged.

I had a look at the non-fiction list too and spotted My Wicked, Wicked Ways by Errol Flynn! Gotta love that title!

I read it years ago. It is a really amusing autobiography.

I loved A J Cronin when I was younger, he's a great story teller. I'm not sure I've read this one though, and I agree it doesn't sound promising. I definitely remember loving The Citadel and Keys to the Kingdom but they might well be the kind of book that I've grown out of!
