    Kindle advice please

Hi have just bought my daughter a kindle for her birthday on saturday (£111.00 one not the more expensive one) how do we go about adding books on from amazon I was having a look last night and saw quite a few free books that would get her started there was a one click button to put them on the kindle which I did but am now having second thoughts an dthink that this would only work if I had bought the more expensive version please help.

    Re: Kindle advice please

It's not a problem, Mel.  With that Kindle you can either transfer the books to it via WiFi if you have it from your router/PC (or any WiFi hotspot), or you just connect the Kindle to your PC using the cable that came with it (take the cable out of the plug and it doubles as a USB cable), then you can drag and drop the files from your computer to the Kindle. It's very easy.  The only advantage of the dearer version is that you can connect wirelessly to the internet anywhere in the world (supposedly!) using 3G, you don't need to rely on WiFi hotspots. Otherwise the way you transfer files is exactly the same on both devices.

Hope that helps.  There is lots of help on the Kindle discussion boards on Amazon if you need more, but hopefully now you'll be able to sort it out.

    Re: Kindle advice please

So you don't have the one with 3G from what I gather?

If I have understood correctly, there are two ways of doing it - by using your wireless connection or by connecting it to the computer. I think the wireless one is easiest.

    1. Wireless. You don't need the 3G option on your kindle to transfer files wirelessly as long as you are somewhere where you can connect to the internet wirelessly - presumably at your home. Purchase the books as per usual. Switch on your kindle and make sure the wireless is switched on (Menu - turn wireless on). Then press HOME button and MENU again.  One of the options you will have is 'sync and check for items' - choose this and the books you purchased on Amazon should appear on your list (they may take a few seconds - be patient).

    2. If you do not have a wireless connection, plug your kindle in to your computer using the USB connection. On the Amazon website, go to the 'manage my kindle section'. There should be a menu on the left with 'your kindle library'. Here you will see a list of things you have bought. Next to each will be an 'Action' button. If you click on the arrow to the side of the action button, there is an option to 'download and transfer.'

Hope this makes sense - it's a bit difficult to explain like this.

That's a much better explanation Deborah - thank you for setting it out so clearly!  I must admit that I don't really think about how I do it when I transfer books - I either "drag and drop" via USB for non-Amazon files, or I turn on the WiFi and they download automatically.  I don't even need to use the Sync function.

And I was just thinking that your way made more sense as it rambled less, Penny.
