Impossible choice, but this one I read some time ago, and I still think about it:

    Mother London by Michael Moorcock

Now reading: The Botticelli Angel by Harry Cauley

It's lovely when you find a "new" book..... Missed this one altogether, so I think I will acquire this for next year's book challenge (I don't usually read doorsteps). Thanks Penny. x

Can we choose a children's classic and an adult classic? Interesting that many of the choices (Book Thief, LOTR, Dark Materials, Harry Potter, Private Peaceful etc) are cross-over childrens/YA/adult reads, though.

My 'new' children's classic choice would be Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian, simply because of its message that sometimes there are good reasons to break bad rules, and its emphasis on the redemptive power of love.

Lovely book Jane Angi - you can choose anything, and I think you have chosen a good 'un.  I too loved that book (and didn't read it ever until last year!)

Goodnight Mr Tom is one of my all time faves, I first read it when I was about 10, and have read it several times since!   Zach is actually named after Zach in GMT!  I can't wait to read it with him when he's a little older!

Do you mean Angi? Many apologies to Angi - I know who you are, and how did I do that!!  (Thanks Bernie)

How did I miss this thread when it was started?  I'll think about this and come back to it.

Mr Grey I don't mind at all if Henry Cavill plays you.

Just one title?  Well add more if you must, but this is just an exercise to make you think a bit.

Ooh, ooh, just noticed this get-out clause!  In that case, can I also add The Last Samurai by Helen DeWitt?  Re-read it this year and was blown away by it.  Very sad, because it is already out of print. Sad  (Unless you have a kindle.)

Go on then, I'll nominate one SmileMiddlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, one of those huge, totally engrossing epic stories about a family of immigrants to the US that also covers so much more. Totally engrossing and compelling with very real characters.

I thought Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks and The Somme Stations by Andrew Martin or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

    Couldn't decide which I liked best !

I'd certainly agree with that one.  A wonderful book in its own right, and one that should be handed down to future generations so that the horrors of WW1 are never forgotten.

Thanks for bumping this one, I never did come back to it.  I'm going to nominate The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist as mine, I think everyone should read this dystopian love story.
