Not wishing to spoil anyone's fun, wouldn't it be cheaper to take your books to the charity shop just to get rid of them ?  I listed my books just to try and get hard to find books on Bookmooch not just to keep RM in business Big Smile

Sarah..you can go on www.royalmail.com to get an exact price but surface mail will probs cost about £2 odd for a 300 page book, an Angel is someone inthe owners country who will mooch for you.
So she knows someone in the uk, who will mooch from you and then mooch to her if necessary.
Worth getting yourself a US Angel, as a lot of US owners won't post to us as surface mail is not available to them.

Umm thats odd as i took a normal size paperback to my PO and they told me £5 something to send to canada so had to turn the person down on bookmooch-  umm will have to check that with them again

Marie, I'd say they are quoting you for more expensive services, I've never paid anywhere near that and have sent around 87 books to the USA and Canada. Just make sure to ask for printed papers surface mail - most I've sent have been lighter books and have only cost me £1.60 ish - the same as most books cost to send in the UK!

Ok thanks Shona - will change my status on bookmooch now:)

Whilst I do understand that reasoning Shirley - I have been really succesful on Bookmooch - a lot of my wishlist books are hard to get hold of here and I've managed to get loads on there - also lots for my friend.

In total I've received 141 books and sent 97 - so I've done really well out of it.

Some of my mooch 'friends' will now find books from USA especially for me - you can reserve books for people.

Postage to Canada is a little higher and does take longer - but make sure it is going Surface Mail and it will be fine.  Some countries also need a customs label.

Good luck everyone - it's really addictive and great fun .

I have been successful too Anne on getting hard to find books, all I was saying to people just joining is not to get carried away otherwise they will be be losing a lot of money just to get rid of books when a charity is much cheaper to get rid of them !

I started out by listing 30 books and then started looking for what I wanted, if you put on a list of rairly recent books, yes you will get takers and receive points but unless you can find something you want you will be stuck with points and out of pocket on postage.

Received 111 books and sent 67 books.

Oh, I see what you mean Shirley!  Yes, it would be very easy to get carried away and I personally dont tend to add books to my Mooch list that already have lots of copies available.  To be truthful, I would prefer to send overseas as a lot of ex-pats are desperate to get their hands on books that are widely available here but not there - I know how great it feels to get my mitts on a much-wanted book - so like to be able to repay the favour.

I collect Celia Dale books and one that I wanted was listed on Abe books for about £12 plus postage from the States, I had a look on Bookmooch and found the same book listed in America so I asked for it and this lady sent it to me,she had got it in a job lot from a closing down book store, it was a bit dog eared but it didn't matter because I only want to read it and keep it, and it didn't cost me a bean!       So for really hard to find books then Bookmooch is fantastic.

I recieved two requests as soon as I put my books into my inventory - both from the US. The first person is happy to wait a few months as it's the last they need to complete a series but the second person said that she wasn't desperate for it. I quite like the idea of giving books away through Bookmooch as I know that they're going to good homes. I've donated tons of books to my local charity shop and not seen a single one of them on the shelves! This also means that I can fuel my guilty pleasures - Nancy Drew, Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley, of which there are plenty on Bookmooch. RiSi is great for getting popular books, but I can't see anyone wanting to swap Sweet Valley Twins books with me Smile

I sent out 4 books today for Bookmooch, including one to Canada which was less then 2 pounds!  I think I am going to enjoy this.  Although I did join in the hope that it would clear space but I have a feeling my TBR will grow instead! oh well.....

I've sent another 2 out today - one to US and one to Germany.  I told myself that I was only going to send out for the moment and not request but whilst putting my wishlist on last night couldn't resist asking for one.  So much for good intentions. !!

I saw this thread and joined BookMooch because of it.Not entirely convinced it is the thing for me yet as I think I prefer the RISI way, but I'll give it a try.

Got ANOTHER international request. I've decided to send the book to them as it appears to be a rather obscure American teenage Christian novel (which I somehow bought in Glasgow...?) and I'm going to be getting a lot of requests for it (eight people have it on their wishlist). After sending this book there will be no more outside-of-UK mooches until November!

One of the books which was requested was one from the Georgia Nicolson series, and I guess that maybe they're hard to get over there? I'm not sure, I know that they're published in the US but I don't know how popular they are so maybe they're kind of obscure. The girl was desperate to finish her collection and said she didn't mind the wait.

The other book is the kind of thing which you can only get online or in Christian bookshops, hence the amount of requests! The first person said they didn't want to wait 2 months but the second person was fine.

I'm planning on mooching once I've sent my books off. I don't like the idea of getting books in before I send the books off, and I'm waiting 'til next week when I've been to a cash machine before I can send the books out to the US. I do have my eye on some Nancy Drews as I recently rediscovered them this year and was horrified when I realised that my library no longer has any! So yeah, once the books are sent off I plan to request a couple of them so I can relax. I've recently had to read Joseph Conrad and Chinua Achebe for English class so I think I deserve some fluff Smile

I'm up to 14 points already, which I think translates into 14 books. Can you feel the excitement......
