October poll for Risi bookgroup
The Talented Mr.Ripley by Patricia Highsmith One of the great crime novels of the 20th century, Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley is a blend of the narrative subtlety of Henry James and the self- reflexive irony of Vladimir Nabokov. Like the best modernist fiction, Ripley works on two levels. First, it is the story of a young man, Tom Ripley, whose nihilistic tendencies lead him through a deadly passage across Europe. On another level, the novel is a commentary on fiction making and techniques of narrative persuasion. Like Humbert Humbert, Tom Ripley seduces readers to empathise with him even as his actions defy all moral standards. The novel begins with a play on James's The Ambassadors. Tom Ripley is chosen by the wealthy Herbert Greenleaf to retrieve Greenleaf's son, Dickie, from his overlong sojourn in Italy. Dickie, it seems, is held captive both by the Mediterranean climate and the attractions of his female companion, but Mr. Greenleaf needs him back in New York to help with the family business. Second Glance by Jodi Picoult Ghosts and ghost hunters collide in this compelling tale of the paranormal set in Vermont's green mountains. When the patriarch of the Abenaki Indian tribe that was nearly eradicated by that state's eugenics project in the 1930s encounters Ross Wakeman, the miraculous survivor of several attempted suicides who wants nothing more than to be reunited with the woman he loved and lost, they set in motion a chain of events that will unravel an ancient murder and lead to a second chance at life and love for the victim's descendants. Picoult, author of Salem Falls, brings the past alive and peoples it with a cast of extraordinarily well-realized characters whose reach into the future touches the lives of a dying boy, a frightened girl, and their mothers--two women who've given up on love until the revenants stirred up by a plan to develop an ancient burial ground show them what they're missing. Second Glance is an intricate and suspenseful ghost story that enchants and illuminates all the ... read more
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood In the world of the near future, who will control women's bodies?Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are only valued if their ovaries are viable.Offred can remember the days before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now....Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history.Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey
Anagrams by Lorrie Moore Disillusioned and loveless, a chain-smoking art history professor who spends her spare time singing in nightclubs and tending to her young daughter finds herself pursued by an erratic, would-be librettist.

Re: October poll for Risi bookgroup
Have voted for second glance, as I wanted to read that one anyway, and haven't read any Jodi Picoult yet, despite her rave reviews! Tough choice though, I quite fancy any of them! Handmaids tale does sound interesting as does Extremely loud and incredibly close. Will wait with interest....!

Re: October poll for Risi bookgroup
I went for Second Glance as I have a copy I've been meaning to read.
I read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. So good. Really great book. I also read Mr Ripley and that one is good, but I actually liked the film better? Maybe cause it was so stylish.

Re: October poll for Risi bookgroup
Hi there! Haven't posted on here for ages. I voted for Second Glance as I'm a great fan of JP and have it on my shelves. Enjoyed Safran Foer but read it at a book group here and at least half the readers gave up because of the language - what a great shame for them :( Interested in Handmaid's Tale but wasn't keen on The Blind Assassin, enjoyed Alias Grace though.

Re: October poll for Risi bookgroup
Looks like its Second Glance - Jodi Picoult. I voted for The Handmaid's Tale but Jodi was by second choice. I have both on my tbr anyway. Look forward to trying another of Jodi Picoult's though.
Good poll - thanks very much.
