This book was the one which my reading group were reading and when I was given the book initially, I thought that there was no way that I was going to be able to finish it. However, it has really surprised me. I have begun to exist with the tribes of early Britain and to see how they felt about their home and country. I have learnt their traditions and their dreaming. I found the dreaming fascinating in that it showed me how important these areas were to people in our history even though our culture does not acknowledge them now.
I then travelled to Gaul and met the Romans and hated them. I hated their way of life and the way in which they treated those from the lands they were invading. I hated the way they killed for sport. I hated their lack of respect for life itself. I felt for Ban when he lost the slave he had helped.
Then the Romans invaded the East coast and once again I was transported back to those early days when the tribes all gathered together against a common enemy. The final chapters of the book led cleverly into the future so that one really wanted to read the sequel!
I know that this book is not a true historical fiction as no-one really knows what happened at that time in our history. However it is really interesting to see someones take on this even if she may not be right!
This book has made me more open to books that I feel initially might not interest me at all as I never read historical fiction or adventure stories and this is a good example of both!!
In all, I have loved this book and reckon you should give it a try even if it is not your usual sort of book.
