Re: How to search for books on people's wishlists

I had a spell of it apparently not working, then realised I was using AOL search powered by Google - when I went into full Google again it was fine.  Worth checking anyway...

Foreternity (the genius who discovered this!) had posted this elsewhere, but while tidying the forums up today I thought it would be a good idea to have it stickied here in the Info section.

Thanks Penny. I'd picked up the original post, and sent myself an e-mail with the link in, with a high priority marker. Every so often, I resend it, so it stays near the top of my e-mails. Rubbish, I know. But the only way I could think of to make sure I could find it again! :q34:

Now I don't have to do that any more!

I've no idea how easy it would be to create and integrate a one-click link for this, but the admin team is extremely small and does all work on the site in their spare time, so developments like this take a while to come through.  Until then, the above is a reasonably efficient way of doing this.

And do an amazing job, bless 'em! (As do the moderators, too... mustn't forget them! Smile )

Angie - save the page in your Bookmarks - you should be able to find it again very easily then - that's what I did!

This is a great tip, thank you again Foreternity.  I'm not wishing to sound ungrateful but does it usually show all who have a book on their wishlist as I knew from forum posts that a few members were after a particular book but when I did the google search they didn't show on the results even when I scrolled down and got more results - lots of other members I'd never heard of appeared (so it worked)  but not all.  Just wondering, not complaining!

Treez - nothing has changed on this.  The list will often not be complete and entirely up-to-date because the search is done via Google, not via RISI, so the results will always depend on when Google gathered the info from the site for its cache.  I still haven't been able to work out how often it caches stuff, but it's possibly only once every week or even every fortnight.

I think it might be even longer than this Penny - I used this search recently when I had finished a book to find who had it on their wishlist and my own name appeared in the search results and I took the book off my wishlist about 3 months ago??

I've used this in the past and it has worked fine but have just tried it now and it appears to have stopped working? I even tried a really popular book to see if it was just that no one had my book on their wishlist!

Still working fine for me Keeley - do make sure you're using www.google.co.uk and not the search engine your provider puts in the header...

Hi, I also find another method helpful. I type in the book I would like and find swappers. Then I check their wishlists to see if any of them have listed books I have available for swapping - or similar tastes. Then I choose the one most likely to find something they like in my booklist. Most people probably already do this but if not I hope this helps! Sarah.

Re: How to search for books on people's wishlists

A couple of days ago on Twitter I saw a couple of people tweeting something about how Google have changed their search algorithm to affect the way you have to use quotation marks in your searches, or something like that. I ignored it at the time but now I've just tried to use the wishlist searching trick and it's coming up with no results. I've even tried super common titles that I know are definitely on here and it's not giving me anything. Is anyone else having problems? I'm wondering if it's something to do with these changes but I can't find any information on it and may have been making it up!

I've just tried doing a search in the usual way via Google (ie no quotation marks) and it's working absolutely fine for me.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this, as the Google search is to find books on people's wishlists.  Just because they're super-common titles, doesn't mean they'll be on wishlists - in fact, I would think they probably aren't as people have already read them and put them up for swap (hence why there are so many available!)  Try looking at someone else's wishlist and picking one of the older titles on it and search for that instead.  I'm sure you'll find it's working normally.
