    I would reccomend

George.R.R.Martin's  'A song of Ice and Fire' series.

    Robin Hobb's 'The Farseer Triology'

I personally love those two, here are some more suggestions.

    Wit'ch Fire by James Clemens

    Legend by David Gemmel

Annnnd how about the classic Raymond.E.Feist and Robert Jordon?

    Good Luck

Got to echo the sentiment for George R R Martin.  I have been addicted to this series since the start and am frustrated that it is taking him so long to write the next one.  I like fantasy novels but often find them a litlle too 'wizardy' for my liking and they all seem to follow the same kind of plot thread - orphan child who is fairly lowly in society but doesn't know that he possesses power/object which will save the world from unimaginable evil after coaching by some Gandalf-lite and help from fluffy toed dwarves.  That why I like George R R Martin.  Minimal fantasy stuff but "characters so venemous they could eat the Borgias" to quote from the dust jacket.  David Gemmell's early stuff is ace too - Legend, Waylander etc.
