    Bill Bryson

    Hello all

I've just had Bill Bryson recommended to me. Which book should I start with?

I've read most of Bill Bryson's books and they are quite varied. He really shows his intellectual side and skills in research in "A Short History Of Nearly Everything" and "Shakespeare" but if you're looking for a light read with humor then I'd recommend "Down Under", "A Walk In The Woods" or "The Life And Times Of The Thunderbolt Kid".

I would recommend Notes from a small island which is about Britain and actually made me laugh out loud. Neither here nor there is about Europe which is also a great read

The collection of newspaper articles is Notes for a Big Country. He wrote it after moving back to the USA. I've just finished re-reading it. It's really funny and easy to dip into and out of so I had it on my desk to read an article or 2 when waiting for things to load, etc.

Big Island and Small Island were my favourites of his travel books.  Someone has just lent me Thunderbolt Kid and I think they want it back pretty quickly so I'll be reading it soon.

Id recommend all of them!! I just love Bill (only in a literary sense). Now Ive only got Mother Tongue, Made in America and Shakespeare still to read and im sure they'll be just as good as his other books.

    Re: Bill Bryson

I've read all his travel books and whilst they are all good, I must have read 'Neither Here Nor There' at least ten times by now and it still has me laughing out loud!

I start with 'The Lost Continent'. Moved onto 'Neither here, nor there' and 'notes from a small island'. Enjoy.

    Bill is just brilliant.

The first book of his I read was "A walk in the Woods" which I nabbed from my mother.

A good one to start with but also " Notes from a Small Island " is hilarious and then "Notes from a Big Country"
