Hello Tess,
I was wondering how you came up with the ideas of your characters?

Re: CHAT WITH TESS GERRITSEN
Any questions, fire away! It's 4 PM my time (east coast
US) so this serves as a nice break from my afternoon's writing.

Re: CHAT WITH TESS GERRITSEN
Fiona, my characters somehow manage to create
themselves a lot of the time. Jane Rizzoli is an amalgamation of
every female police officer I've ever met. Maura Isles is a lot
like me -- scientific and logical and, for the most part,
unflappable. So I often feel that I'm writing about myself when I
write from her point of view.

Re: CHAT WITH TESS GERRITSEN
How did you come up with such great storylines?
Are you thinking of more books with both characters?

Re: CHAT WITH TESS GERRITSEN
I have a question that I’d like to put to Tess – how do you go about plotting your novels? Do you have the bones of a plot in your mind before you start which you then flesh out as it goes on, or do you let the plot develop by itself as the novel progresses? Do you have an ending in mind all the time, or have some of your endings surprised even you?!?
Many thanks.

Re: CHAT WITH TESS GERRITSEN
I'm now working on the 7th book in the Rizzoli and Isles
series. (It will be called KEEPING THE DEAD in the UK) The
ideas arise from my own interests -- or from fascinating news stories
I've encountered. VANISH, for instance, was inspired by a real
news story about a young woman who was pronounced dead in her
bathtub. They zipped her into a body bag and sent her to the
morgue. And a few hours later, she woke up. I knew
immediately that I wanted to start off a book with a corpse who wakes
up in a body bag! My current book is based on my interest
in Egyptian mummies. And it will be about the forensics of
archaeology.

Re: CHAT WITH TESS GERRITSEN
My favorite book is actually the one the fewest people have
read -- and that's GRAVITY, about the space program! I'm very
much attuned to scientific developments, and wanted to set a book
aboard the International Space Program. That book seems to be a
favorite of my male readers. But if you ask my female readers,
most of them seem to like THE SURGEON the best. My
favorite author? Ooh, that's a toughie. At the moment, I
very much enjoy an author named Linwood Barclay and another one called
CJ Box.
