Why do I keep getting "Tags" at the bottom of my posts now ?

    Re: Tags

This has always been at the bottom of the posts on the integrated forum Shirley - for some reason you just didn't notice it before :q25:.  It's a way of "filing" posts and threads so they're easier to retrieve.  And if you look in the toolbar at the side of the menu page you can see a Tags box with lots of words in it - the bigger the word, the more popular that particular subject (ie the more threads there are on that topic).  So I can file this post under "Tags" and then search under all tags for that word to retrieve it again.

I know it's been asked before....Penny but how do you file your posts under tags, can you talk me through it, holding my hand, so to speak? Wink

    Re: Tags

OK, hold my hand Treez... :q34:

If you click on Edit Tags at the bottom of your post, you can type in your own "filing label", or you can select from a great long list of previously created tags.  Obviously it's probably better to do the latter, as everyone's ideas of what the best labels are tends to differ, so you could have lots of posts about Tags labelled in lots of different ways, which rather defeats the object of having them!

If you  play around with putting a label on this post you'll see more easily how it works, I think.  When I tagged my earlier post, I started to type "Tags", but then it automatically suggested "Tags Explained" for me, so I went with that.

    HTH!

(You can let go of my hand now... :q5:)

Penny, Are you telling me that in 780 posts I have never spotted it before ?

There was never anything at the bottom of my posts till the forum up-grade !

I know I am getting on a bit but I didn't think I was that bad Big Smile

I can honestly say that I don't remember seeing anything about tags anywhere before !

I do understand what they are because I use them on LibraryThing which is why I thought it was strange when it popped up on here.

    Re: Tags

Shirley, they were introduced almost a year ago.

Here is a thread I started when I first spotted them - in 2007 - and was puzzled as to what they were for - http://forums.readitswapit.co.uk/forums/t/7677.aspx

Not sure why you didn't notice them before, but they were there!

Maybe I didn't explain very well !  Usually at the bottom of most people's postings they have Wish List or TBR in blue ?

Well I have never had those on the bottom of my postings and there was never anything else just a blank  page and now I am getting Edit Tags in blue at the bottom, are you also getting this as well ?

yes Shirley - we all get it, along with "report abuse" and "quick reply" off to the right of the page on the same line (or thereabouts)

You're not alone Shirley - I don't recall seeing the Edit Tags bit at the bottom of my posts before the forum update either - and I'm sure I would have noticed because I had wondered before how to insert a tag.

The Edit Tags bit is only visible to you on your posts.  If you log out and view the forum it will not appear on your posts.

I have never looked at the forum when I wasn't logged in,I just tried it and as you said it doesn't show then .  The point I am trying to make is that I never had them before the forum upgrade.
It's not a big issue but it seems strange it is coming up now ?
I do remember the topic about tags coming up before but as I didn't have the ability to use them I did not take a lot of notice.

One of life's little mysteries ?

Maybe one of those strange things, like why some of us get paragraphs etc now, and yet others don't!

Why isn't there a tag for pets then ?  We all seem to have them and it would be nice to be able to tag messages regarding pets .

    Re: Tags

You can always create one yourself - just type something into the box at the bottom of a post.  You don't have to choose from the ones that are on the list - you can put whatever you like.
