Re: Plain Truth - Jodi Picoult

I too think Sarah knew about the pregnancy, there are hints of that throughout, and I'm in two minds about the baby's death.  Part of me thinks that Sarah could not kill it because of her deep held beliefs and it is made clear that Plain people are peace loving, plus she had seen her own child die and lost her son for religious reasons too.  So therefore she must have hidden the body...but then she'd have known it would be found and that Katie would get the blame!  And would a loving mother do that to her child?  Actually it begs a lot of questions doesn't it?  If Sarah knew Katie was pregnant and knew she couldn't keep the baby why didn't she find some other way around the problem...like sneaking her off to an abortion clinic with her sister's help...against her beliefs, yes, but surely better than cold blooded killing?  And she must also have known it was not Katie's beau's child because then she would have just confronted Katie and got her married..wouldn't she?  So it actually shows Sarah up to be quite sly and devious, and maybe she was mentally ill due to her losses.  And then again it did say she had no problem killing chickens..but Katie couldn't do it....

If she did kill the baby or conceal the body, she must have had some faith to think that Katie would not get sent to prison, therefore losing her too, so she can't have been thinking straight.  I mean, why leave the baby where it could be found, wouldn't she go bury it somewhere?

Ho hum, that's really got me thinking nowHmm

From what I rmemeber, Sarah hid the baby and I assumed she covered him up and hid him in the barn. I thought she was going to go back and hide him properly later but wanted to hurry up and get back to bed before the men got up for the milking. I suppose she should've hidden the baby's body properly right away. Perhaps she wasn't thinking properly?

Also, Kate didn't know that Sarah knew she was pregnant and Kate wouldn't even admit it to herself so I think an abortion would've been out of the question.

In an ideal world, Sarah would have confronted Katie and made her see what was for the best, whether an abortion or marriage or whatever....but I guess that's why we have the story as it is because it shows that even the 'ideal' world the Plain people strive for isn't ideal.  And if it had been different then we wouldn't be discussing it, lol.

True, but in an ideal world surely Katie wouldn't have gotten pregnant? Wink

i have just finished this, another great read by Jodi, i wasn't sure about the ending, if the mother found kate asleep with the baby already dead ( i think i prefer this ending!) or if she smothered the baby herself to save her daughter. i kept thinking all the way through it was going to be something to do with her father! as he sat up when she crept out! i'm easily led!! my sisters keeper was the 1st one i read of Jodi's and have to say the others, for me, haven't been as good!!
