The Way of Wyrd - Brian Bates

    Author: Brian Bates
    ISBN: 1401904777

A young Christian scribe, Wat Brand, is sent on a mission to record details of the pagan peoples in remote areas of England. After passing an uneasy evening alone in the forest, he is met by a guide, Wulf, who leads him on his journey.  Wat's life is about to be turned upside down on the web of wyrd.

Brian Bates explores the ways of pre-Christian magic in Britain through the fictional characters of Wat and Wulf.  A well told story with some amazingly researched information amongst the weave.  Brian Bates knows his history and he effortlessly melds facts into the storyline, people and places so that they seem real.   The world that Brian conjures is both brutal and magical and the book does make you long for times gone by.Its not exactly a page-turner, but the pace is such that I did read it in one sitting.  The writing style can seem a little bare-boned, but it doesn't matter because you are too interested to see what is going to appear next.

"The Way of Wyrd" is one book that will be kept on my shelves to be re-read at intervals.
