Angela's Ashes is the only one I've read of these - I don't normally go for misery memoirs, but I really liked it - a good quick, easy read

    Sorry couldn't comment on more!

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt  I read this the day it was published and loved it, far better than anything published since.  Great film too.

The Virgin Lover and A Respectable Trade by Phillipa Gregory - have tried and failed to enjoy these, although she is well loved on the forum

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley - read something of hers years ago, but really dont remember what!

Fluke and The Survivor by James Herbert - read years ago and enjoyed at the time

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (tried to read before, will attempt again!)  Was given this but didn't fancy it so put it up for swaps

Mist Over Pendle by Robert Neill (read a long time ago)  I have three of his on my TBR: Black William, Moon in Scorpio and Rebel Heiress.  I'm sure I have read one of them already but it was getting on for 20 years ago (before I left home) and I can't remember which one. I just love books about Lancashire witches, and in fact have a book called that!

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (tried to read before, will attempt again!)   Like Anne Cater, read it when it was published and liked it a lot. Although it's a book about struggling for life in a tough environment, it's not gloomy to read.

Bel-Ami by Guy De Maupassant (a bit heavy perhaps?)    not keen on Guy de Maupassant, but I'm always pleased to see French authors on people's TBR

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley   read this a while ago and really loved it - transported me in another world/another time

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (seems to come highly recommended)    on my TBR - got a tatty copy for 10p at a charity shop, bought it although I'm not sure I'll like it - comments seem to vary from love to hate about this one!!

Interesting, it seems a firm favourite here but I found it quite difficult to get into really, must try again as I must be missing something!

I loved the series (have it on DVD) and I read the book.  Loved the section right up until Titus Alone, when it did indeed get weird.  The whole book changed pace and basically, it is one of the few books I've never finished

Herald of Joy by Pamela Belle

    wolfsbayne:
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

A lot of people rave about this book and, indeed, the whole series, however, I am not a fan.   It is also one of the few books I could not finish.  I think I got about two-thirds of the way through before abandoning it and passing it on to a grateful reader.

I hope you get to read them and, if so, I would be grateful to hear your comments.

    Cheers,

Yeah - and a lot of people liked it at the time it came out, I seem to remember. Maybe give it another go - it's weird how some things take and some things don't. As I said before, I don't like "misery memoirs" on the whole, but I found this interesting to the end, horrific in parts, and memorable. He certainly does tell a good story. Thinking about it, I might reread...
