Re: Titles, Tasters & Temptations - August Reading
Well I did pick up On the Edge by Jenny Pitman and read the first page. Then I read Sam's thread on book cravings and realised I was having one then and there. Toying with the idea whether the craving was for Wish Upon a Start by Mandy (goodness I can't think of her name) - a kinda chick lit, or A dog called Kitty by Bill Wallace.
The latter won! This is a tiny book about 100 pages I think, about a little boy and a puppy. Not sure if it meant to be a childs story, but it intrigued me, so I am a child for while til I finished it. Not giving up on the Jenny Pitman book, just jumped down to the bottom of pile for this month.

Beadyjan:
so I picked up The Girl you left behind by Jojo Moyes which had just arrived and began reading it and so far I am hooked its superbly written and unputdownable.
oooohhhh you're making me want to read it now Jan, a ML copy landed this morning but I'm already reading a ML book and need to make some headway with this one first. I've not had much time to read over the last few days.
Mr Grey I don't mind at all if Henry Cavill plays you.

I finished John Boyne's The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brocket and have made a start on War of the Wives by Tamar Cohen - I adored her first book and I think this one is going to be great too.

I finished Will You Be There by Guillaume Musso yesterday. Whilst similar to TTTW it was miles better in my opinion. Much more tender and light. I am now reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes and loving this one too. Just having a brew and then going back out into the garden to continue with it. I cannot think of a more pleasant way to spend my afternoon.
Paw prints on my heart.

I raced through (pardon the pun) Gold by Chris Cleave, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Have just started The Red House by Mark Haddon. I've loved his earlier books, but haven't got into this one yet. Early days though!

Finished Tuesday's Gone (Nikki French) - enjoyed it and reviewed it.
Now reading a comic fantasy: Damned Busters by Matthew Hughes, in which a young man summons a demon by accident and then refuses to sell his soul, leading to a strike in Hell which causes more problems than you might expect. Unspurred on by the likes of pride, envy and greed, people just don't want to do anything . . .

Re: Titles, Tasters & Temptations - August Reading
I finally finished Foundation which was long but a fascinating read and a good mix of political and social history. I look forward to reading part 2 of Ackroyd's history epic when it comes out.
After that one I picked up Ever After (Graham Swift) which is my earliest swap challenge for this month, but I found the first 20 pages quite heavy and not quite what I'm in the mood for at the moment so it's gone back on the shelf for now. Instead I've made a start on A Proper Education for Girls by Elaine do Rollo which is much livelier and very promising so far:
Lilian and Alice are the bright young twin daughters of the eccentric Mr Talbot, who resides in a huge mansion stuffed full of fossils, inventions, suits of armour, botanical specimens and other elements of his sprawling collection of curiosities. When Lilian rebels against Victorian standards of morality she is packed off to India as the bride of a dreary missionary, leaving Alice alone and in danger of falling victim to her father's bizarre and hair-raising schemes...

Finished The Damned Busters (Matthew Hughes) which was great fun and less of just a comic book than I expected. Looking forward to the sequel.
Now reading Woman With a Birthmark by Hakan Nesser.

Starting to read The Dead of Winter - Rennie Airth, the last of the three John Madden stories. Lovely golden age of crime novel.

Starting A Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. This was recommended to me by a colleague at the Foodbank. Not sure what to expect...

Finished Woman with a Birthmark (Hakan Nesser) which was a very sad story, with the only ending that could have been satisfactory.
Then tried Painter of Silence by Georgina Harding, but just couldn't get into it. May try it again later on.
Settled for More Than You Can Say by Paul Torday, which grabbed me from the start.
