    ~*~ JUNE's Stinker of the Month ~*~

I'm loath to say it was out-and-out stinky, but my most disappointing book this month was An Equal Stillness by Francesca Kay.  The structure and tone of this fictional biography made it really difficult for me to engage with it properly as I just found it flat and tedious after a while.

The Summer Of Living Dangerously by Julie Cohen

I managed 100 pages and can't remember a thing about it.

    Paw prints on my heart.

Can it be anything other than Shades of Grey? One of my OH's colleagues wanted a copy and couldn't find one, so I bought it and sent it in to work for her. When she'd finished she returned it for me to read.... and I thought why not? It might be awful, but at least I'd be slagging it off from a position of knowledge rather than ignorance. I think I would have preferred remaining ignorant....... awful, truly awful.

None for me really this month, my lowest score was a 6, for Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro, which was short stories, and I just found I couldn't quite get my teeth into them!

Because I hate not to finish a book once started I continued with Candles in the Sand....Katie Stephens, which I ditched in April where I should have left it.  I enjoy some chicklit but this was so badly written ( in my humble opinion). Either the author or the compositor (it was a Kindle read) couldn't spell and articles changed from being one thing to another and then back again!

Canvey Island –James Runcie – 5/10

This isn't a badly written book, he isn't a dreadful author - I just hated the story, and found it ultimately depressing.

I had two that I simply couldn't face finishing this month.  I really wanted to like Candlemoth by R. J. Ellory but found I was wading through it so slowly and was neither intrigued by the story nor impressed by the writing, that I gave up at the halfway mark in search of something more appealing. Sadly, I chose The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Steadman which although not badly written I found completely lacking in period 'feel', and the story was just way too sentimental for my taste.  I should qualify this by saying that neither of these are bad books, but unfortunately just really not my kind of thing.  This is what happens when I take recommendations from friends! Didn't really have any out-and-out stinkers but the books I enjoyed least this month were:-

    'The Uninvited Guests' by Sadie Jones - thought she really tried too hard to do a  story like An Inspector Calls whilst not really succeeding;

and 'I Capture the Castle' by Dodie Smith which I just didn't like the style of, despite it being one of the Big Read Top 100 books.

Just finished: Infinite Sky - C.J. Flood
Now reading: Tarnished ~ Julia Crouch

I had a few I started that I couldn't get into but don't include those

Adele Parks - About Last Night
Mike Gayle - The stage and hen weekend

These were both 2/5 for me.

About last night just didn't really have had any twists, knew what was happening before it happened and the reason for alibi was rubbish!

Stage and Hen weekend was the one where Hen and Stage were on different sides, and you never find out what happens, the author said it was to let people decide. I make enough decisions in my day I don't need to do it about books too! I have LOVED all of Mike Gayles books before this so quite surprised I didn't like this. To be honest the fact it was on two sides made me wary. I can't wait for turning forty! :)

Glad these two were library books!

I didn't have anything too awful this month, but my worst book of the month was THE FEAR INDEX by ROBERT HARRIS. I did manage to finish the book and I was enjoying it at first but the story was really over the top and the ending was very poor.

I'm really sorry to have to choose it as I know many of you on here really enjoyed it, but my stinker has to be 'A Perfectly Good Man' by Patrick Gale. I just felt that it was a nice book, but nothing really happened in it.

Funnily enough, I think my 'stinker' was a book of short stories too. Playing Sardines by Michele Robers. I just didn't see the point in the first one and after that life was just too short to continue.

Sadly yet again my book group came up with another stinker - the guardian angels journal by Carolyn - Jess-Cooke

    Readable but not very good
