Tuesday's Gone - Nicci French
From Amazon
Psychotherapist Frieda Klein thought she was done with the police. But once more DCI Karlsson is knocking at her door.
A man's decomposed body has been found in the flat of Michelle Doyce, a woman trapped in a world of strange mental disorder. The police don't know who it is, how he got there or what happened - and Michelle can't tell them. But Karlsson hopes Frieda can get access to the truths buried beneath her confusion.
Painstakingly, Frieda uncovers a possible identity for the corpse: Robert Poole, a jack of all trades and master conman. But the deeper Frieda and Karlsson dig into Poole's past, the more of his victims they encounter - and the more motives they find for murder. Meanwhile, violent ghosts from Frieda's own past are returning to threaten her.
Unable to discover quite who is telling the truth and who is lying, they know they are getting closer to a killer. But whoever murdered Poole is determined to stay free - and anyone that gets too close will meet the same fate.
A gritty heroine, a gruesome crime and a terrifying hunt for a psychotic killer, Tuesday's Gone is not to be missed by fans of psychological thrillers.
Review
I've long been a big fan of the Nicci French writing partnership - they were writing psychological thrillers long before their current popularity, good stories well told with strong female lead characters (my particular favourites are "Killing Me Softly", "Beneath the Skin" and the wonderful "Secret Smile"). But I was disappointed in the last two or three before this series started. Psychotherapist Dr Frieda Klein has given the authors a new and original angle, and this series is shaping up really nicely - I enjoyed the first, "Blue Monday", but found this one even more gripping.
The discovery of a naked man's body, gripping a cream bun and with a cup of tea at his feet, in the flat of a mental patient is a striking start. The discovery that he is a con man with a large number of impacted people gives this book an amazing cast of characters, all well drawn and with their own secrets. Add to that the evolving story of the complex character of Frieda and her family and friends, and the policeman Karlsson with his equally human back story, and this is a very good read indeed. "Blue Monday" finished on a slightly ambiguous note, and the untied ends of that story flow through this book too.
I'd urge everyone to read this series in order - if you don't, you'll be missing a lot in terms of character development and those continuing themes - the small amount of recapping here doesn't really give you it all. The story is well-paced and involving, and none the worse for the small amount of serendipity in its resolution. Highly recommended, I haven't been so impressed by a series since Peter James' Roy Grace books, and I can't wait for the next one.

Thanks for the review Annie, I also have this from Vine. I too find Nicci French a bit hit and miss, but I did enjoy Blue Monday and am looking forward to this one even more after your seal of approval.

It's on my wishlist and I've put in a request for a swap about 4 days ago. Fingers crossed - I love the concept of a series running through the days of the week and I loved Mondays 'starter for 7'!

Thanks for the review Annie. I was wondering about this one on Vine but went for Nicci's latest solo work instead. I liked Blue Monday although I think it took me a couple of goes to get into it. Will probably still look out for this one.

I have the solo work too! Might be my next read, but I'm also tempted by the Melissa Hill...

Re: Tuesday's Gone - Nicci French
Really enjoyed this one; the pairing of psychotherapist Frieda Klein and DCI Malcolm Karlsson is an intriguing and engaging one, and so far thankfully free of 'will-they-won't-they' overtones. He has to battle with fellow police officers at all levels in order to bring her into the investigation, and even once she proves her worth she still faces hostility and suspicion from those around her. Frieda’s character develops nicely throughout the book - she appears to soften a bit but still remains a bit of an enigma.
I totally agree with Annie that these books should be read in order - there are so many references to the previous case that Klein and Karlsson worked on in the first book (Blue Monday), as well as unfinished business with her lover, her sister-in-law, his ex-wife and kids etc, which I personally would have found very frustrating if I wasn't familiar with the characters. Also, at the end of this book it’s obvious there’s going to be a theme involving one of the main characters from Blue Monday, which will run on into book 3 and possibly beyond.
After reading so much Scandi-crime recently it's nice to find a British crime thriller that I really enjoyed. Having said that, the names Frieda Klein and Malcolm Karlsson do have a distinctly Nordic ring to them - coincidence? (I think not .)

Re: Tuesday's Gone - Nicci French
Psychiatrist Frieda Klein is back in the second of the series and this
time as well as doing her day job she is helping out the police. They
find a dead body in the house of a disturbed young lady who can't tell
them if or why she killed the man or how he came to be in his residence.
What follows is an investigation that reveals a tangled web of lies,
deceit, betrayal, murder and dark secrets.
I didn't particularly
like the first in this series but I did enjoy this one much better.
There are so many different parts and sidelines to this story so it is
never dull, I particularly liked the investigation into the girl at the
start and her condition. The story visits a lot of what happened in the
first book (so you don't have to read it but I certainly would as it
gives you a clearer picture for this book). Frieda is a stronger
character this time around although she still visits her previous mentor
who again I dislike and find both weak and annoying.
The
chapters are fairly short in length which is always good as you can dip
in and out when you have things you need to be doing. The writing is
fairly easy to follow however as with the first book (although not as
much) there is a bit of jumping around from one scene to one particular
individual and instead of stars or lines there is a few spaces (in
length) separating from the last paragraph it can get confusing although
this time you work out quickly it is going back to that individual. I
did see a few of the twists coming but enjoyed it none the less so 3/5
for me this time and will keep an eye out for book 3.

Also had this from Vine and really enjoyed it. The plot was possibly a bit far-fetched (as my old gran was fond of saying) but I loved the characters and the atmosphere and the style of the book. I don't know why but I've never felt drawn to this author duo before, but I certainly liked this one.

Re: Tuesday's Gone - Nicci French
Just finished this one and totally agree with the review - 'Blue Monday' was great but 'Tuesday's Gone' was even better.
Read it in about 2 days and now cannot wait for the 'Wednesday' instalment!
Presume there will only be 7 books in the series, unfortunately!!
